View Full Version : Slow XP Pro shutdown ...
Hey,
Basically , XP ****s down slowly, like about 2 minutes. I havent done any of those tweaks to clear dll cache or anything at shutdown, shutdown settings are stock ... so .. any ideas or is this normal?
Thanks,
Massa

Hmm...Do you have sp1 installed? Are all your services and how many apps. are running at shutdown? 2 minutes is a bit long though..Any specifics may help. :)
I have Blackvipers safe tweaks done, system restore is disabled . SP1 is installed and i have AVG antivirus, and Sygate personal firewall.

Well one of the big complaints about sp1 was that it slowed everything down (startup & shutdown noticeably), with sp1 my shutdown can be up to 30 sec or so, from less than 10 sec before.
Do you have a ton of RAM, like 2 Gigs or so that is heavily utilized and needs to be written back to the HD?
*edit* Ooops, I see you have 1Gig RAM. but the above still applies.
Just for the heck of it try disabling your AV and firewall, see what the shutdown is like then.
Wish I had better answers.
Do you have the system set to clear the pagefile at shutdown?
Check Event Viewer and see if any services are having trouble at shutdown.
Go to add remove programs and see if you have this hot fix installed q329170. If so remove it, it will greatly speed up the shutdown and performace of the system in general.

Hey Sid ...
I have that installed on my computer and do not seem to be having a real slow shut down or startup ... but wonder if I really need it? Do you know what it was for? Any information would be appreciated.
Sorry about the thread jack :D
You can read up on it at MS, just type the q# in the search at the knowledge base and it will pop up. Sorry I tried to get it for you but MS seems to be down... Maybe due to the power outages.
Anyways it has to do with a flaw in SMB or server message blocks. I don't run it on my workstation but I do run it on my server.
