ADSL Problem

I have been using ADSL connection for a while know. We have two 1meg connections in the basement of our building and I have been playing Battlefield 1942 with no problems until a few weeks ago when I did a complete reinstall. Windows XP Pro and I even wiped the hard disk. Now when I begin a game online the ping is as it was before a healthy 20 or 30 something then It will shoot up into the hundreds and then back again. It has never done this before and is doing it on all servers I attempt to connect with. Also the problem is not only confined to Battlefield, Raven Shield and Half Life are doing the same. Making the games lagg so much that I cant play.

Am new to this computer stuff and would like to know if there is anything I can do.

With gaming there isn't too much you could do. You could tweak for faster downloads and more stable speeds but you can't tweak latency. Sorry I take that back there is one thing it's treaky to do but from what i herad/read it helps with the latency http://dslnuts.com/DSLwiring.shtml
