Will proper tweaking using Cablenut show up improving my Road Runner Speed Test (downloads a picture and reports kb/s)?
Is this speed test a good indicator?
Answer to question # 1 - Yes. Answer to question # 2 - Not really. Read this thread:

Maxxi:
Where did you get these new Cablenut settings from? I've been to the Cablenut, Speedguide, and TweakXP forums and I can't find anywhere where Mnosteele posted them.

CaptainSpeleo:
I got them off of a different thread (initially only a few posts below this one). Here is the link:

They work pretty well but personally I have found these (their are my own little "twist": a mixture of j79zlr's and mnosteele52's suggestions) to work (for RR users) even better (copy and paste into a txt file and rename with a *.ccs extension, apply within cablenut, reboot and hopefully enjoy).

Frank, the only real difference is the TOS value. Personally, I have noticed little difference in changing that value. It controls how networks handle your IP requests, but from what I've read, it is fairly ambiguous.
A TOS value of 240 sets the IP TOS as Network Control Priority, Low Delay, Normal Throughput, and Normal Reliability.
A TOS of 92 sets the IP TOS as Immediate Priority, Low Delay, High Throughput and High Reliability.
What the actual difference is, well you gotta ask someone else :D

:D RE : TOS=240 hehehe
but for ...Network Control Priority...
exaclty priority 111=network control
IMVHO should be TOS=247
BTW for surfing ...better to use: costs=0; dalay=0; ALLremaining=1 hehehe
so one can play with ALL remaining 1 or 0
ALLremaining in this case means remaining 6 settings
from total 8 settings of TOS
TOS in SG TCP/IP Analyzer
string with values 0 or 1 in below 8 settings
explained as: IP type of service field (RFC1349)
= 00000000 for TOS=0 ; but =11110000 for TOS=240
TOS=TypeOfService
reserve
cost
reability
throughput
delay
prioryty
prioryty
prioryty
IMVHO optimal TOS setting is NOT universal for exact connection...
depends on both: ISP - OK; home router - OK
but possibly also:
-source server;
-hops;
-kind of activity (eg: surfing; ftp; video ect)
:confused: unfortunately same home routers change TOS value
means - TOS value result from analyzer different than registry setting
avaiable ONLY two options priority:
000=routine (default) or 100=flash overide
PS during experiments with TOS andy effects were observed :mad:

J79zlr:
Thanks very much. I'll just leave it at 92 like Mnosteele suggests.

CaptainSpeleo - Mnosteele now suggests a value of 240 - I guess both are good, but still... :)

:D I'm vvvvv.sceptical in TOS value in connections tweaking - WAN side.
:confused: OTOH it pay role with QoS...so from LAN side.

is it TOS value working for you ?
1. easy to check using ping.exe - with Notepad create pinkTOS.BAT file
in my case easy copy to Notepad & save as pinkTOS.bat file
eg w2k is as follow:
C:\WINNT\system32\ping.exe 66.34.156.231 -n 12 -v 48 -l 1322 -f >c:\pinK.txt
C:\WINNT\system32\notepad.exe c:\pinK.txt
check pings(ms) results
run > pinkTOS.BAT with different ping.exe switched values
-v [#] (# means TOS value) >> eg with TOSvalue= 92; 240; 247; 8; 52; 55; ect
TOS value range 1-255; not present by default TOS=0
can also try with different:
>> eg try IP: 66.34.156.231 or 167.206.5.41
-l [@] (@ means amount of bits; not present by default @=32bit; not fragmented @=MTU-28)
>> eg try @= 1472; 1464; 1452
2. you can also use different TOSvalue in registry
>> eg using CN remember to reboot after new settings
compare your speed >> dwl speed test ftp://ftp1.optonline.net/pub/test64 file 64.0 MB
IMVHO any TOSvalue NOT working for me - at all :(

on the end of TOS story
:confused: new phenomenon was discovered ?? - unclear hehehe
lets me call it <2 options TOS priority phenomenon>
:D but if one
believes; trusts; looking for < magic numbers> or <unopen knwoledge>
just exactly for own: tweaking; internet connections; TCP/IP protocols ect
...may I ask such person - would you kind STOP read that post imiediately.
one can trust me - below is nothing immpotant to above the attractions
(but IMVHO hehehe "the attractions" beter to say paranoid thoughts | dreams | mind)
ad ovo {intentionaly from Latin; but AmEng ~ so started from THE egg}
TOS messurement results are explained as 8bits TOS string
IP type of service field (RFC1349) = 00000000
(for TOS=0 ; but =11110000 for TOS=240)
exactly combinations of: 1 |0 values in 8fields
r|C|R|T|D|P|P|P
respectively to:
reserve | Cost | Reability | Throughput | Delay | Prioryty | Prioryty | Prioryty
(seen IP type of service field (RFC1349) exactly related to TOS value from address bar - explnation below)
w98SE - same TOS values are NOT correct in SG TCP/IP Analyzer results
the WHY & the WHEREFORE
>>> unclear reason(s)
is it sending problems ? ( hdw| sfw| ISP | hops | all items)
or receaving | meassurement problems ? (sever |SG TCP/IP Analyzer | all items )
>>> result is evident
ONLY two options TOS priority settings avaiable:
000=routine (default) or 100=flash overide
in w98SE
one can see mentioned phenomenon as follow:
TOS=value from address bar in your result
SpeedGuide.net http://forums.speedguide.net:8117/ SG TCP/IP Analyzer
eg address string from Analyzer result as below
copy mine from address bar ...DATA_OFFSET=40&TCP_Options_string=0204052a01010402
&IP_MTU_DISCOVER=1&WIN=65535&RWIN=65535&MSS=1322&SCALE=0
&TTL=117&TSOPT=0&SACK_PERM=1&IP_TOS=0
&IP=80.50.118.198×tamp=1061108165... SG TCP/IP Analyzer mine result (actual w2k)
compare addressTOSvalue vs your's TOS registry setting
compare both mentioned TOSvalues (from string vs registry)
w98SE can find tham different
if registryTOS not from aviaiable w98SE two options
means ...only two options priority settings: 000=routine (default) or 100=flash overide...
I do not know if w95;98;ME are also affected (can be checked! hehehe)
sample eg TOS compare =240 than later =244
with registryTOS=240 gradualy increased - add 1|2|3
or to registryTOS=244 gradualy increased - add 1|2|3
with affected connections you can see respectively results
the same TOS=240 result with registryTOS 240 but also 241;242;243
the same TOS=244 result with registryTOS 244 but also 245;246;247
<2 options TOS priority phenomenons>
were NEVER seen on w2k
:cool: w2k registry TOSvalues are exactly the same as SG TCP/IP Analyzer results
probably also wXP not affected (should be checked!)
BTW on the FORUM <2 options TOS priority phenomenons>
ealier were noted several times by several different customers (lack of details)
A. is it worth to check all posts ??? OS; router; ISP
Q. no , observations & detailed relations are needed
:mad: PS instead of PLjoke
so in <2 options TOS priority phenomenons> affected connections
Analyzer result
will be number value (natural; nearest; lower; but 0 or from multipling 4)
unforutately above not be explained in math.logic symbols
I cannot not recall from school - previous century fashon hehehe
no body is perfect - esspecialy me
