View Full Version : this is my test results
Hey everyone this is my first post.. woo hoo
I ran the spybot and adaware before posting.
I am currently uncertain of the advertised caps down/up speed ratings for my carrier.
I use road runner from the triad, Greensboro area and noone in the 2 offices i called could tell me my cap limits. lol
I'm particulary intereseted in better performance since I am running a gaming server. here is the test results i have so far.
TCP options string = 020405b40103030001010402
MTU = 1500
MTU is fully optimized for broadband.
MSS = 1460
Maximum useful data in each packet = 1460, which equals MSS.
Default Receive Window (RWIN) = 64240
RWIN Scaling (RFC1323) = 0 bits
Unscaled Receive Window = 64240
RWIN is a multiple of MSS
Other values for RWIN that might work well with your current MTU/MSS:
513920 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 8)
256960 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 4)
128480 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 2)
bandwidth * delay product:
Your RcvWindow limits you to: 2569.6 kbps (321.2 KBytes/s) @ 200ms
Your RcvWindow limits you to: 1027.84 kbps (128.48 KBytes/s) @ 500ms
MTU Discovery (RFC1191) = ON
Time to live left = 54 hops
TTL value is ok.
Timestamps (RFC1323) = OFF
Selective Acknowledgements (RFC2018) = ON
IP type of service field (RFC1349) = 00000000
I dont rlly know what I'm looking at here, so if anyone can comment on these results.
My op sytem is win Xp home, athlon 2200, 640 mb ram , gforce 64mb and audigy 2 soundcard

Your settings look great, how is your speed?
:cool:
This is before the adjustments
Your RcvWindow limits you to: 2569.6 kbps (321.2 KBytes/s) @ 200ms
Your RcvWindow limits you to: 1027.84 kbps (128.48 KBytes/s) @ 500ms
This is after
Your RcvWindow limits you to: 1985.6 kbps (248.2 KBytes/s) @ 200ms
Your RcvWindow limits you to: 794.24 kbps (99.28 KBytes/s) @ 500ms
are these numbers relative to the speed? down/upstream speeds?
I ran the speed test and didnt notice any difference.
Im just wondering because after the changes users on my server are experiencing more lag?

That isn't a speed test try this ftp://ftp1.optonline.net/pub/test64
donwload it about halfway and let us know the resaults.
hey thxs for the help ---
My download speed according to the link you provided
averaged out about a steady 230/kbs .
How does that performance seem?
Also, is there an accurrate test for upstream flow?
If your tweaking download does that mean you will increase your upload also?
thxs again

your getting a 1.88 out of 2megs not bad

Under speak easys take a test from the closest server to you this will tell u up and down.
well thats great i think lol
but as i mentioned in my first post, i run a gaming server and ever since i made the changes i have horrible lag problems for the clients on my server. It is generally a lag free server.
Question do i need to retune the server, or have i potentially lost some upload capacity??? plse help

horrible lag problems you can't tweak the upload or latency those numbers steele gave are the only thing to make the speed consitent,and a litllle more stabe. That and also you can't tweak online game the way you could is in the game it self. Sorry but it's the turth.
speak easy speed test results :p
1937/352
hmmmm not 2 bad
MAN WHAT A MISTAKE I MADE:o
BE VERY CAREFUL AND BE INFORMED OF YOUR POSSIBLE OUTCOMES FROM TWEEKING YOUR SYSTEM.
LIKE I SAID IN MY ORIGINAL POST I RUN A GAMING SERVER, I HAVE RUN IT FOR ALONG TIME.
THE SERVER RUNS VERY GOOD, UNTILL THE TWEAKS I FOLLOWED IN THIS FORUM.
YES I MAY HAVE GOTTON MORE SPEED, BUT SOMEHOW BEYOND THE FORUMS WISDOM I HAVE SUCH TERRIBLE LAG IN MY SERVER BECAUSE OF THE TWEEKS.
MY EXPERIENCE SO FAR, I GAINED VERY LIL SPEED AND HAVE A BIG TREMENDOUS HEADACHE TRYING TO SORT OUT MY SERVER NOW..
I DIDNT BACK UP MY ORIGINAL REGISTRY SO THERE GOES MY SERVER UNTILL I FIND AWAY TO DO IT...........

First of you can goto cablenut and delete cablenut tweaks second of you cannot control lag. No piece of software will cause lag. Only the isp will cause lag or bad connection such as bad cabling. It's all on th isp's end.
Hmmm talk about timing with ISP. problems -- thats very odd that the ISP starts having problems as soon as i make the changes.. I dont think so...
I dont think these tweaks work for the application i was using them 4 ... OH well
Oh yeah I did try to undue the cablenut settings, you would think that if i did that My Ip analyzer numbers would go back to the same as they were before i started. THERE NOT.
The only help I need now is getting my system back to original performance settings.
I understand you may not think that these settings had anything to do with the problems with my server , but they are the only changes I made period end of story.
Guess you should learn a little more before you start screwing other peoples equipment up..................... !

Screwing up peoples equipment rolf. You know how many people came here thinking they could tweak gamming you can't I could show you post after post. That and also if you read any help threads they all said back up ur registry now who's faught is that not mine. How whould you know if it's on ur end and not the isps did you test the line. Also how could u compalin you got about 90 some odd percent of ur capp.
Your on cable too that shared bandwith i think everyone here will tell u that cable is not the best for gamming it has more latency then probably any other type of connection excluding satalite.

Also how do you want me to fix it do you want me to call ur isp and saying hey he is getting to much lag. Better yet I'll show you every post that people thought you can tweak ur latency.

mccoffee is right by all means and in all accounts. Not that my personal opinion really matters - just wanted to let you know. I can guarantee anyone with some knowledge on this forum will back him up and put you down for some really lame and hateful comments - the man's trying to help you and all you can do is @$^%@ back. I don't think that's appropriate.
PS – there is probably 100 posts similar to yours, 50 posts about lag, etc. – we’ve been there, done that and it’s getting boring. I would respect mccoffee for even looking at (not to mention answering to) your thread. Just my two cents. I don’t mean to flame.

mnosteele52 - any reason for suggesting 240 instead of the 90 or 92 you used to advertise? Just curious?
ya my fault for not backing up my registry.. your right..
And you were right about more speed, but something has changed in the registry that has changed my server performance.
If you look at the time stamps of my posts, they totally back up my claim.
I'm not on a bashing bandwagon, and my lag problem isnt myself lagging.
I should say my clients are experiencing lag-like problems, this maybe from to small of packet size after the tweeks. (i'm not sure).
If i was merely interested in more speed, it did help a little bit.
But before this post I went and found a patch to restore my original registry setings and for the last 30 minutes --- NO PROBLEMS.
thank goodness HAVE A NICE DAY !!!!!!

Rofl if your clents are expirencing lag it's probably not on ur end. Rwin has nothing to do with ping and latency how many times do I have to tell u this. Nothing, you probably got better resaults becuase people are not on the network.

xodeus THERE IS NO NEED TO POST IN ALL CAPS, THAT MEANS YOU ARE YELLING!!!!
You can easily go back to your default settings, just open CableNut and select "delete CableNut tweaks" save to registry and reboot, now you are at defaults.
As mccoffee said, you can't tweak your latency. If these settings caused a lag in your gaming then lets figure out which settings did so. First start out by only using the TCP/IP parameters and no AFD ones. Only fill in the following boxes and see if the problem still occurs.
EnableFastRouteLookup = 1
EnablePMTUDiscovery = 1
GlobalMaxTcpWindowSize = 49640
MaxFreeTcbs = 8000
MaxHashTableSize = 16384
MaxNormLookupMemory = 5000000
SackOpts = 1
SynAttackProtect = 1
Tcp1323Opts = 0
TcpLogLevel = 1
TcpMaxDupAcks = 3
TcpMaxHalfOpen = 100
TcpMaxHalfRetried = 80
TcpRecvSegmentSize = 1460
TcpSendSegmentSize = 1460
TcpTimedWaitDelay = 30
TcpUseRFC1122UrgentPointer = 0
TcpWindowSize = 49640
MaxConnectionsPer1_0Server = 20
MaxConnectionsPerServer = 10
DefaultTTL = 64
DisableUserTOSSetting = 0
TcpMaxDataRetransmissions = 6
DefaultTOSValue = 240

Maxxi 240 is a setting CableNut recommended.

Glad to hear it mnosteele52. I've cooked up my own little twist on your current RR settings (mixed them with j79zlr's and came up with this (seems to work really well - a nice browsing boost, same download and upload speeds - i.e. very stable and near or over the quoted caps for RR):

:D RE : playing with TOS hehehe
...Maxxi 240 is a setting CableNut recommended...
IMVHO was resignation from priority settings...
similar to above:
* you can try also TOS=112
* BTW =48 & =176 ("do not pay attention on costs" - hehehe)
:confused: OTOH same home routers change TOS value
means - analyzed results are diferent than registry setting

:nod:
I have a Linksys and I get reports of 000000 as my TOS.
j79zlr - do you think it would be possible to somehow access the router's settings and modify the TOS value to match the one we set via Cablenut? I too happen to have a Linksys Router and haven't seen a TOS field within the Router's Setup. I know there are at least three hidden screens (accessed via specific address inputs - but they don't offer TOS modification). Right now I have gone back to a value of 92 - no real difference @ 2Mbps/384Kbps (my test results still produce 1.99Mbps down and 416Kbps up). Thus I can't complain, but every little bit helps - even if it's a question of web pages loading a little bit faster, balanced download speeds, etc. - you get the picture.
BTW - your website is awesome - I've recommended it to many people as a wonderful source for simple registry tweaks and a very good TCP/IP dynamic settings generator. Glad to see you've covered both the 9x and NT lines of Windows. Thanks again.
