Cox Cable Settings

Good evening. Like the site, did some reading and did the things suggested (resetting modem, clearing cache, etc). Like to know what I can do to increase my download speed. I talked to the Cox support; they reported my connection was great. Pinged my gateway and average time was around 25ms. My problem is when i start to download, it starts off at 600-700kb but drops down to the 200s. McCoffee, I used your ftp site, halfway through the download my average speed was 288kb. Here is my information:

ISP = COX
OS = WinXP SP1
ISP advertised down = 3000kb
ISP advertised up = 256kb
Firewall = Zone Alarm Pro (disabled it do to these tests)
Installed ram = 256mb

TCP properties for IP = xx.xxx.xxx.xxx ()
Browser/OS = Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows NT 5.1; MyIE2; .NET CLR 1.1.4322)

VERY IMPORTANT TO DO THE FOLLOWING

1. Under your LAN connection - properties - general tab, uninstall all the protocols there that you do not need.

2. Open IE and select tools - internet options - connections - LAN settings, make sure NOTHING there is checked.

3. Make sure you have the latest drivers for your NIC from the manufacturer. Set your NIC duplex mode to 10mb half duplex for Cable, for DSL it is ISP dependent unless you are using a router, if so then set it to 100mb full duplex for both Cable & DSL (the instructions are in my Help & Tips link (http://forums.speedguide.net/showthread.php?s=&threadid=73799)). If you are using a router make sure you have the latest firmware.

4. Clear your temporary internet files.

5. Power cycle your modem, unplug it for atleast 15 seconds.

6. Download and update then do a scan with SpyBot 1.2 (http://beam.to/spybotsd) & Ad Aware 6.0 (http://www.lavasoftusa.com/support/download) to remove any spyware then install and update SpywareBlaster (http://www.wilderssecurity.com/spywareblaster.html) to stay spyware FREE. YOU MUST USE BOTH AD AWARE & SPYBOT TO ENSURE YOU ARE SPYWARE FREE SINCE ONE FINDS WHAT THE OTHER MISSES.

When I used all your suggestions things improved greatly, Why would setting my NIC to 10mbps Half Duplex help things ? When set to auto detect it selects 100Mbps Full Duplex seems as though Cox has that setting on there routers.

Cox uses 10mb half duplex as most all cable modems do. Auto is ok, but setting it incorrectly can possibly cause data collisions.
