You need to use an 80 conductor cable to take advantage of DMA otherwise it will cause problems.

Right click your "My Computer" icon on your desktop, and select "Properties"

When the window comes up, select the tab that says "Device Manager"

You'll see a list of devices with plus signs (+)
Click the plus sign for 'CD Rom", and then cliclick on each CDRom in the list. (one at a time) then click the button that says "Properties"
Then click the tab that says "setting"
In there you need to uncheck where it says "DMA"

Do that for each of your CD Roms (or DVD) then reboot.

See if that fixes you up.

If it doesn't, then in the device manager for each of your CDRom's or DVD, click "remove" and reboot. Windows will reinstall them.

Good luck.

Oh, 80 conductor cable is the cable that goes from your CDRom/DVD to the socket on your motherboard. It looks almost the same as the older 40 conductor cables, only there are 40 more tiny wires inside it. They replace the older, slower ATA 33 cables.

You can buy one at any PC store. They may be called ATA 100, ATA 133 or 80 conductor cable. The guy at the store will know what you want.

Good luck

Remove the Secondary Controller from device manager, and reboot.

Nicola, if that doesn't work here are a couple of other things that may..... depending on if you have your CDRom, and DVD setup "physically" correct of course.

Restart in Dos mode, and type scanreg /restore.
When the next page comes up, use your arrow keys to select a file dated before your problem started (if there is such a file present in the list)

or if that is a no go.

Restart in safe mode. Go into device manager, and remove "all" the IDE devices, including CDRom's DVD's, IDE Controllers., and reboot. Windows will/should detect and reinstall them.
After done that, go into Control Panel, and run the "add new hardware" wizard.

Good luck.

Sooner or later we'll get you fixed up, have faith :)

Both drives can be on the same cable Nicola, but one must be "master" the other must be "slave" (or both can be "cable select")
Try each of those methods and reboot. If "master"/"slave" doesn't work, switch around to "slave"/"master" or use "cable select" on both drives.

Set the jumper on the back of the drives accordingly.
Plus, the cable has a colored stripe on one side (usually red, or blue, but could be any color) Make sure the colored stripe is on the same side as the Power cable when connecting it to each drive.

lave i know because when i boot up i have noticed in the writing that flashs up on screen it says slave dvd

You would get the same result if the drive was set to Cable Select and is on the middle adapter (on the IDE ribbon)

You should verify the jumpers your self. If you have on set to calbe select and another device set to Master/Slave you can get whacky results.
