Exchange relationship with AD

Can exchange server exist without Active directory?

can someone pls help me with more technical explanation, I'm trying to explain a programmer who told me that Exchange can run without AD ...
he also said, to manage user accounts, policies we dont require AD.

I tried explaining him that without AD, w2k server would not perform its function, but he just wont understand ..

Is the programmer talkin about Exchange 5.5 or 2000? 5.5 obviously does not need AD, but Exch. 2000 will not work unless it's on an AD domain. It is through the AD where you manage the user attributes for the Exch. Server. I would get more technical, but am at work and runnin on a deadline for a server setup! :)

he was talking about exchange 2K ... he still insist that AD is an optional

if u have free time pls help me with the technical stuff thx!
