My friend has SBC ISP connected to a Linksys BEFSR41 router it was working for about a year and it stopped working about a week ago. I used the routers' ppoe and the said something about password authentication failed tried resetting and upgrading still no go. What I am wondering about is there a Host Name or Domain Name required? I tried it without the router and it works so it has something to do with the router.

same ISP here, different router. so, for what it's worth......

my login does have the domain attached, as in "userID@sbcglobal.net". the domain may be different depending on where you are. other than that and the password, there aren't any special settings.

only thing i can suggest is resetting the router to default settings, and reconfiguring the whole thing over again. there may be an overlooked setting that somehow got changed mucking things up.

*edit* oh, and here's all the WAN settings i use. probably wont help much, but what the hey.....

Yeah you have use username@yahoo or sbc.globial. in logging in i don't think you need a host name.

One more thing you might have to unplug router login just using the modem, Then replug router then try to login sbc has a login promblem with the linksys.

sometime if I unplug the router it has to be reset. Hold down the little reset button on the front of the router to reset it to factory defaults, then reconfigure it.

Yeah it's the routers' login problem since it works with only the modem pluged in and I reseted to default upgraded firmware and everything. I tried putting SBC as Host Name and/or Domain Name still no go. I'll guess I'll try another router later. Thanks for the help anyways guys.

You do not need a host name or a domain name with SNET/SBC DSL...I set these up all day long, have well over a hundred Linksys routers on them.

As long as your routers firmware is somewhat recent, and you still get PPPoE authentication failure errors, call up their support. Yeah it takes a few minutes to get through to somebody...but at least you'll be up and running soon. Ask them to reset your password...it can occasionally get hosed (corrupted) on their authentication server side. It happens. Sometimes level 1 support can do it, other times they say they can't, and they have to get level 2 to reset it. I don't know why they're so inconsistant, but I've had them do that many many times...it happens a lot for some reason with SNET/SBC. I've never seen any other ISP have authentication problems like that (well OK, just one other ISP). Just confirm the username and password with them...they sometimes tell you they cannot tell you the current password, but they can change it. Other times they'll be able to tell you the existing password. (again, I don't why that's never consistant). Also have your phone bill handy..they'll often ask you the billing phone number...plus the next 3 digits on the bill...just to verify who you are.

That's the most common thing. Other than that, I've seen line noise get in the way of authentication...have them do a line signal quality test to the modem.

If you've had an account with SNET/SBC for quite some time, your old username should alias over to their newer username scheme...meaning if you just signed in with "username" before, then that should work. Yes all newer accounts are "username@sbcglobal.net" or whatever....but old ones should still alias over fine. I still have plenty of old accounts, including ours at the office, that just log in with "username".
