long story short... friend swapped cable modems with his cousin. same ISP, and very likely same node (within 1.5 miles of each other). he just wanted to try out the new cable modems his ISP are using to see if it makes any dfference.

for all intents and purposes, as far as the ISP is concerned, will my friend's cable internet traffic look like it;s coming from his cousin (because he has his cousin's modem) and vice-versa? i guess what i am trying to ask is, are cable modems provisioned in a way that that attaches the subscriber (account and activity-wise) to that modem specifically, even if the modem has been moved to a different location?

the reason i ask is his ISP called him and said they had received a complaint about e-mails being sent from his computer that had attached virus or worm. what we don;t know yet (he will call the ISP tomorrow) is whether the ISP is tracing the e-mail by sender info (meaning it came from my friend's system) or by IP source (meaning it came from his cousin's computer that's using his modem, if that's the way cable modems are provisioned). i am going to have to fix whick ever computer is infected, and was curious as to if the ISP will look at a modem and assume any activity coming from it is coming from the subscriber who is renting that modem.

The account is attached to the modem. The ISP has no simle way to find out that the modems have been swapped. On the other hand, they are apt to be unhappy if they find out about it. Best to swap them back. (And do a good virus scan!)

thanks, Kip. thats what i was thinking.

when i spoke to him yesterday, i suggested he call his ISP and just be straight with them for the sake of getting the problem straightened out. since both he and his cousin have the same ISP, same speed caps and such, swapping the modems wouldn't be looked at as criminal, but is proably a minor violation of the ToS and the ISP would make them swap the modems back.

anyways, i appreciate the help, sir! :)
