Hi Gang
I currently have ME on a desktop with cable connection with static IP.
I just ordered a Dell Laptop (XP PRO) with wireless WLAN card and waiting and excited to use the connection at home.
What do I need to make it work? I know I'll need a Wireless router, but what about an Access Port? What does an access port do actually? I'm sure i wont' need it correct.
Also, my buddy said it might not work because Cable usually assigns only 1 IP, so I'll need to pay them for another IP. I'm with comcast. Is this correct? anyways around it?
anyone that has cable and is able to get wireless networkign to work with their laptop, your help, advice and tips are appreciated.
thanks.

if you get a Wireless Router you should be good to go..
what's an access port?
did you mean a Wireless Access Point..
- what that does is, it will allow you to connect 1 or more computers to your Wired Network Wirelessly...

yeah, your cable ISP generally only assigns one (1) IP add. to your modem, but that's why you get a router (wired or wireless)
it will basically split your connection (more or less) and it will let you hook up computers to your router..
somebody else will be able to better explain this..
I don't have a wireless network...somebody else will be able to give you advice/tips on this..
I only have a regular (wired) ethernet router hooked up with 4comps to it...
you want the linksys wireless 802.11b with four ports.
It'll cost you less then a 100 on sale.
It's amazing, all you do is plug your computers in and setup your lappy with a pcmcia card. Just change the ?identity? on the pcmcia wireless card to 'linksys' from default.
That really is all there is to it. You DONT need to install ANY software on the lappy, just the wireless driver.
any other questions, PM me. I dont stop by here very often.

An access point...just consider that a "wireless hub" or a "wireless switch"...you use them to connect wireless computers as a LAN, or connect wireless computers to an existing wired LAN.
A wireless router is what you want...it's a router with a built in switch, and built in wireless access point.
I'd get Linksys "G" wireless.

thanks.
yea, i meant access point. will do. thanks again
I am using Comcast cable with 3 PCs at home (2 laptops, 1 desktop). And I use a Siemens wireless router to form a home network and share the Internet and a printer. They run pretty well. I believe you can do the same.
Just follow the instruction of router, if you have any problem, call Comcast support or your router's support, they are very helpful. In my experience, comcast don't mind if you use a router. Hope this helps. good luck!
