I've had cable internet for about 4 years now and it has always worked great except for the occasional down times. As of late the internet keeps stopping. I have a brand new linksys router that is probably 5 months old. I tried unhooking it from my computers and running the cable modem straight into the computer but it still shuts off. I repeated this with both computers in my household but it still does not work. What happens is the internet will be working fine and all of a sudden it will just stop and stay off. Sometimes the offtime is anywhere from a couple minutes to a couple hours. When you look at the modem theres 3 lights. Normally when the service altogether goes down the middle light blinks orange. But im my case all 3 lights stay lit green which means it should be working fine. Does anyone think that this could be the modem and time for a new one? I tried called Comcast and they ran me around cycling the modem and unplugging it and the whole ordeal but it didn't fix anything. What is all your inputs on this situation?

Could be the DNS server is acting up, or something might be fubared with the DHCP server. Nothing on your end is messed up.

Call your ISP and ride their ass till it get's fixed. There really isn't anything you can do on your end. You can power cycle the modem all they want but it isn't going to fix anything. It sounds more and more like their DNS server is messed up but... When it goes "down" try pinging the gateway. Then ping the DNS server. I'm guessing that you will get a response from the gateway, but not from the DNS server.
