I have had great luck with Pioneer, however NEC makes a very nice dual media drive at an affordable price.
Available in Europe to boot.

Pioneer has more experience (and 70% of the market) and the NEC does the same as Sony for less money.

US is region 1, I believe Europe is region 2. If so, you will have to change the regions in your firmware in order to play or rip retail DVD's

Most DVD drives I've seen (both DVD-ROM and DVD+-RW) allow you to change the drive's region about 5 times, with the final choice being final (ie, you can't change it again).

I'm sure there are probably firmware hacks to get around that, but most people probably never need to change the region coding more than once.

There are hacks that make them region free. I would not suggest using them, however.
