Best Software Firewalls and AV ?

Hi all

Can some one help me find the best protestion from Hackers and alike but telling me witch is the best firewall to have and AV software :rolleyes:

I am using aDSL 512k/256k on a usb frog modem

Best software firewall? IPTables .. but I doubt your using linux so take your pick:

Also, why the rolling of the eyes? Is this something that should not be taken seriously or are you just "put out" that you have to take the time to secure your system?

The eyes are for not to be taken to seriously as it is for a home office PC not server or lockdown PC just for peace of mind

Before you spend money on a firewall or AV, try the demo first to see if it fits your needs.

I prefer a router...nice hardware NAT for basic firewall protection.

Symantecs AV.

I use ZA Pro as my software firewall. Norton AV for my Anti-Virus program and Im sitting behind an 8 port Linksys router.

For software AV Prog.. I would go with either Norton
or Grisoft's AVG
For Software firewall, I would go with Sygate
if you have a 32bit Windows O.S.
If your are running Linux.. I would choose Shorewall (uses iptables) I like it because I can monitor it's logs, via a ssh client.

I use a Hardware Router (NAT) plus a Software firewall.
Some people disagree with this, but making "layers" of protection is where it's at.....

My 2 cents.

AV - Norton AV 2003.

But I'm with YOSC..... a router is by far better.

IPtables is newer than IPchains and has had many revisions put forth that that IPchains doesn't offer.

IPtables also acts as both a packet filter and stateful inspection system where IPchains responds as only a packet filter.

unless your into peer2peer apps and downloading suspicious stuff, a hardware NAT is all thats necessary. Why waste the resources on software firewalls? NAT is not going to let anything through unless you've opened a port for it to come in. As long as you don't download a trojan horse among the pron & warez, you shouldn't have to worry about things getting out.
