Hi

Im at the end of my patience with this so if anyone can help I would be eternally grateful!

Ive got the telewest broadband 1 meg service (blueyonder) and am having problems with anything outgoing on my connection, be it uploading to ftp, sending email with attachments or sending over msn messenger.

What basically happens is that it will either go to a crawl (less than 1k) or it will just timeout or fail.

Ive contacted my ISP over this but keep getting the usual bull**** automated response crap so ive turned to you guys!

They suggested it could be something to do with AV or firewall software which I thought myself so I did a format and clean install of XP and didnt put either of the above on, still the same problems.

Then I wondered if it could be a virus of some kind and did all the scans I could think of, nothing. To back this up further Ive completely replaced the hard drive with a new one and still get the same problems.

Ive got my connected shared just using nic to nic with another pc in the house (both using winXP)

Ive done all the above on that pc too and found nothing.

Blueyonder arent willing to accept it as a problem as ive now had about the 10th email ignored. Can anyone help me here and possibly give me advice on what I should do re: pc and blueyonder?

Thanks in advance
Ash

What other software did you install after the format?

List all the software you installed.

I was hoping to see something in the software that would give a clue, like spyware, or file sharing apps like Kazaa/KazaLite etc. But no luck. (maybe Download accelerator, but I doubt it)

I can't see anything that would cause this from your end. The only thing I can suggest is try without the internet sharing installed. Maybe it's the sharing causing it.

If not, it looks more like an ISP problem to me.

Maybe mnosteele52 can help with some tweaks for you.

Check for spyware, and file sharing apps on that PC too, they can consume a lot of upstream bandwidth. Just in case it's the other machine hogging the bandwidth.

shared just using nic to nic get a router that is what is slowing ur down u could get a linksys for about 60bucks or goto www.pricewatch.com also if you want to learn more about linkys or any other brand of router goto networking help below, linksys there pretty good ,with tweaking u need the router first.

Let me take another shot in the dark u are using ics internet connection sharing well u cant tweak ics but its very diffacult to do. Plus ppl like ur self run into all this trouble when using Internet connection sharinng. :D

thing is, it wasnt like this for nearly a year whilst i was connection sharing, thats why i dont think its anything at this end. ill give it a go without sharing to the other pc and see what happens.

thanks for the help though fellas, any more advice is welcome :)

update: spoke to my isp and they went through all the n00b checks on the phone etc etc

changed from using the nic they supplied to the onboard nic on my KD7 (installed latest drivers etc)

did few tests: downloaded fine at 125k flatout still had all same outgoing problems.

so they said they will come out and replace the modem to see if this fixes the problem.

however, and this is where it gets interesting, my brother called last night and said he was getting an identical problem, he has the same isp but is on the 512k service. he also only lives about a five minute walk away from my house.

surely this now means it is an isp problem?

I noticed that you are a user of Direct Connect. Keep in mind that if you have a lot of slots open for others to get files from you, that will hinder your upload speeds for other programs.

If you are using the neo-modus version of DC, you might want to consider using DC++ as a client. DC++ does away with all the advertising that neo-modus has (which will save some bandwidth), plus you have the ability to throttle the amount of bandwidth used by the client (uploads/downloads will be throttled at the same percentage to avoid leaches).

DC++ can be found at http://dcplusplus.sourceforge.net

Good luck with it all,

thanks for the idea mate, but surely if direct connect wasnt running then it wouldnt effect my connection.

ive noticed that when it is running users cannot get higer than about 2k uploads from me which before the problem started was nearer to 30k.
