I am using XP pro SP1. After all we are all doing critical updates time to time.

When using the sfc /scannow command and rewriting the corrupted files with XP pro sp1 CD, does it go back to square one again and screw up all the updates?

Anyone knows?

Good question. I've wondered about that myself.

Here's what the help file says for the sfc command.

If sfc discovers that a protected file has been overwritten, it retrieves the correct version of the file from the %systemroot%\system32\dllcache folder, and then replaces the incorrect file.

If the %systemroot%\system32\dllcache folder becomes corrupt or unusable, use sfc /scannow, sfc /scanonce, or sfc /scanboot to repair the contents of the Dllcache directory.

Still not enough info to answer the question in full.

Anyone?

try searching here (http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/home/using/productdoc/en/default.asp?url=/windowsxp/home/using/productdoc/en/system_file_checker.asp)

No. it won't revert to the old files. In fact after doing something like a service pack update it will not even detect the cd even if its in the tray. This is why a while back I wrote that artical on slipstreaming.

Yes, I am using the slipstreamed XP sp 1 CD. I was concerned about the updates after that.

Now I have another question.

When I use SFC /scannow, it overwrites several dll files from the CD. Just out of curiosity I run the SFC /scannow command again after a reboot. Again it is asking for the CD to copy files.

I wonder why it wants to replace file again?

Can somebody help him with this? The only system I have with a floppy drive is my server and I'm not shutting it down unless it crashes. Everyone on the network must logon to the domain controller so all passwords are controlled by that system.

I've never had to use this but keep it in my tools arsenal just in case I need it.
