You might check out the hardware compatability list for XP at Microsoft, Roody. Just to be sure

I'd go with Windows 2000 Pro. It's alot lighter than XP, and will run alot faster on that machine.

Ok thanks Zuma and AgentBeast. Been wanting to play around with XP Pro myself.

Can you guys tell me something. Will Pro cause any problems for games?

If you have some games that don't want to work try the compatibility mode. I have used it on occasion with win 2k pro.

Compatibility Mode

This is a function built into Windows® XP, and added to
Windows® 2000 as of service pack 2.

(To enable it on Windows® 2000, execute the command
''regsvr32 %systemroot%\apppatch\slayerui.dll''
from the Run prompt or a command console(without the quotes). You will need
Administrator priveledges to enable this. Service Pack 2 or higher must be
installed. This will add a tab to execution shortcuts called 'Compatibility'.
You may want to check first to see if compatibility mode is already available.
Do not do this in Windows® XP -- you already have it active by default.)

I have actually used this mode to install programs that protested that they only worked in win 95. I created a shortcut on my desktop to the setup file on the cd. I checked the compatibility mode on the shortcut and the program installed no problem. I then delete the shortcut and create a new one to run the program.:D

Long as your hardware compatiblity is good like mentioned above, should be no problems. Even though your PIII is one of the older ones, you can still turn down all the "fluffy appearance" features XP has enabled by default, to really increase performance on older CPU's. In my opinion, in this mode on older CPU's...it's as snappy as 2K...with better compatiblity than 2K.

I ran XP pro on a Pentium 233 w/ 64 mb of ram for a short time once. 98 would not install nicely on the machine but XP did.
