View Full Version : Server dies a terible death
Well I don't know what I did wrong but the tyan dually is dead. I must of hit one of the capasitors when reinstalling those damn oversized heat sinks. Off to Fry's tomorrow night to replace it. I'm going back to the retail HSF.
BTW, I've had enough of AMD's hot CPU's. Next server will be a xeon system.

that sucks man, what kinda xeon u gonna go with a p3 or p4?
that can get pricey!
Haven't really looked ino which model but I would assume that p3 stuff is getting hard to come by now.
BTW the mobo is only 2 months old so it still under warranty.

in that case just rma it!
as for teh p3 xeons u can find them around, not really that hard.
dual xeon mobos start about 350, good ones kick in at about 400 and a 2.66 xeon processor is 300 bucks
so for a board and 2 processors u can hit the 800-1000 mark pretty quick!
Sorry to hear that Sid...you're a good guy dude....good fortune will be just around the corner.
Man that sucks Sid.
Gets to feel some days like if you didn't have bad luck you would have no luck at all, eh?
Hope ya get it up and running without too much trouble or money.
INTEL XEON 2.4GHZ PROCESSOR
Socket-603, 400Mhz FSB, 512kb Cache
$356.08
Now thats Canadian so I guess thats sort of like 2 or 3 bucks American aint it? :)
But the Mobos are pricey for socket 603's

What else is different about the Xeon and the P4 other then the Xeon supports more then four gigs of ram?
Is the Xeon really that much faster then the P4 to warrent the extra cost?

not for the home user i dont think, but if sid has the money to spend and wants to, then hey, he can go for it, but i wouldnt waste my time with a 400mhz fsb one rather get a 3.06ghz ht 533fsb

Different internal pipelines and optimizations for running very cache intensive programs, and database engines. It's usually found on high end workstations, or servers. You can get it with various options, from the base 512k cache, to 1 meg, to 2 megs of cache.
For common apps like games, day to day programs for most people, it's not faster than a same spec desktop processor. But for some really robust...high end apps, like some professional graphics programs, or some high end accounting or other database programs, they run better on Xeons. Plus servers that crunch huge databases.

Thats odd, a dual system I built for a friend doesnt run hot at all. If you cant stand the heat, GET OUT OF THE KITCHEN! :D
Dam sid :( Sry to hear that. If you get the board RMA'ed, LMK. I'll prolly take the board and both cpu's from ya ;)

No need. Called Fry's and they said just bring it back and they will give me a new one.

Server should be back and running tonight. Sorry LT, this board has absolutly no OC abilities.
Don't have the money to build the xeon system yet and when I do it will be just another server for the business.
Not sure if I want to build or buy the next server. I kinda need something reliable.

It may not be your fault on the capacitors, Maximum PC has an article this month about many faulty capacitors lately due to the wrong compound inside.

You might have just gotten a bum board. I've got five AMD duallies going 24/7, 365 no problem.
Well no, that's not true. I get the electric bill each month.
The problem started as soon as replace the system case and added those cpu sensors under the cpu. The Volcano 9's are so big there is almost any room to put them on without F****** somthing up. Big row of capacitors right there between the HSF's and some of them moved a little bit. I am going back to the retail HSF's now that case ventalation is not a problem.
I had to trim a little bit off my Thermalright AX-7s to fit the Tyan S2460s. You may have scratched one of the caps.

Well i wasn't gonna oc it, i just wanted to fold with a dually ;)
.........ok, I did want to oc it, there, you got it outta me ok? sheeeeeeesh! :D
Hope you get it up and runnin again sid ;)
Well I stuck the new mobo in, fired it up, it loaded winders server. I opened up Tyan system monitor and checked the temps(used retail HSF that came with the MP 2000's. Temp looked good, so I fired up a couple of folding proggies and set the affinity. Girlfriend ask for my help so I got up and did the honnydo, came back to find system had shut down but all the fans and lights still on(same thing that happened before). damn it!!!! I turned the psu switch off gave it 30 seconds and turned it back on. Its been running without fault for about two hrs.
