dvd rippers

I was curious what apps you have had good luck with in this area. I want to rip my personal collection to avi (or any other highly compressed format) for the long coast to coast plane rides with my dvd-less laptop.

I use dvd decryptor to backup my dvds but the output is VERY large as it basically copies to VOB.
