A friend of a friend recently got cox internet access. Well all of a suddenly it stop working, actually there was a windows problem.
Win98 was fubared,so format and did a fresh install.
His computer is an old GateWay Select
Althon 650
10 gig Hd
3dfx Voodoo 3
GateWay Monitor
64 megs of ram
Espon usb printer
SB 128 soundcard
4 built in usb ports
Win98se
IE6
Yeah I know his computer is pretty ancient, but all they use it for is internet and typing stuff. It seems to work fine for that.
Note I was doing this at my house. So after I fresh installed win98se and updated everything.
Then I go ahead and tried the internet on it from my home. First I plugged in a nic in his comp and used my router to connect it to the net.
That worked great. Then I psychically had his modem with me so I went ahead and hooked it up as if he had it in his own house. No router and I removed the nic.
I used what it came with which was some weird USB adapter that connects to the cable modem. I think the name of that weird usb adapter was Compex?? I'm not sure. I think its called lan/usb adapter? Cable Modem was a Surfboard one i believe.
Well I plug it in ask for the disk I do that and then reboot.
Bingo Bango it works perfectly fine at my home.
Then I go ahead an tell him his computer is working fine. I went over their and hooked it up.
I used the usb way. Okay so I boot up his comp.
Went ahead an open IE6 and it working. But all of a sudden it stops working.
If I went to a webpage it would do nothing, yet the activity light on his modem was moving.
Okay then I shutdown his comp.
I went ahead and removed a modem that no longer was in use and then I installed the same nic I used at my house.
Oh before that I remove the devices for the Usb cable modem listed in device manager. So there would be no conflict.
Now it was directly hooked up using the Nic card. No usb/lan dohickey attached.
I hit IE and the internet is working. I visit a couple web pages to see if there are any problems. Well 5 minutes into it, I can't surf anywhere.
I checked to see if I can ping his Ip Address and yeah I got a reply. I went ahead to see if I could send email using Outlook Express. That didn't work.
THe lights on the modem all looked like they were working.
After like 30 minutes messing with it. I went ahead an removed the nic and it's drivers. Then I went back to the Usb way.
It would do the same crap. Internet would work for like 5 minutes then nothing. But yet I could still ping his Ip address. Email couldn’t be sent or received.
I looked at the way his cable connection was getting to the modem.
It was hooked up on a 3 way splitter.1 was the main cable going in and the 3 connections where 2 tv cables and his cable modem.
So do you think it has something to do with that connection or is that a normal thing? Because when I connected it using my cable which is by itself it worked fine.
Could it be Win98 playing mind games with me and working at my home fine and then not work at his?
Would upgrading to Winxp solve the problem?
Maybe some how by me connecting his modem at my house screw up something in his modem?
Any suggestions would be helpful.
