OK.. it is back on, but I wasn't able to delete my old partition and create a new one because when I tried to do it, it said that there were setup files on it !

Grr... how do I get to that screen from boot up without having to go through this again ?

Thanks.

There is a certain point during the install where you can delete/create/format partitions. You should be able to do it from there.

Thanks guys.

OMG... I was up until 1am (get up at 515) trying to get it to work and all I got was to the damn formating. I think there is something wrong with the CD I was using. When I put it in, it would say "operating system not found" and just stop. You can't do anything.

After that, I called my buddy (this is about 1130) and borrowed his XP Pro disc. I stuck it in and it booted right into it. After it loaded, I switched the CDs and I could delete the partition, I started the quick format and that is when 1am came. This morning, it was froze at 20% format. POS !!!

Anyway.. I restarted it and let it format while I left for work. We'll see where it is when I get home. I hope it will work !

Here is a question: if I use his disk that is working OK, can I still put my serial number in there when they ask for it ? If so, that is sweet. If not, I don't have XP to put on my computer. :(

you "should" be able to use your own key

Go to a Win 98 machine and find the file smartdrv.exe (c:\windows). Copy/paste it to your 98 boot disk. Boot into the 98 bootdisk, then type: smartdrv [enter]. Navigate to the i386 dir on the XP CD and type winnt [enter]. That will start the XP install on a CD that doesn't want to boot.

When I used someone else’s CD to install the software, I had to use their key or it wouldn’t work. I tried my key but it said the key was invalid. Not to worry though, I used their key (keep the computer off-line so it can’t try to register) and then when you’re done with the install… use the program XPPID.exe to substitute your valid key for the “already in use key” you borrowed from your friend. You can hold off registering for 30 days this way.
