Crossover is used only when you are directly connecting two hub/switches or two computers directly (NIC to NIC).

Unless you are uplinking a hub/switch to your router, you have no need for a crossover with a router.

I was using the crossover cable before I got the router just didn't want to run another cable again, But I guess I have to. :)

yeah.. you're gonna have to run a new cable.. The ports on lots of switches and routers act as a crossover all on their own therefore most of the time a straight through cable is all you need.

Revans310,

Whoa!

If this is a long run, you can always just cut the ends and reconnect to female jacks using a straight-thru wiring scheme.

Then use a straight-thru patch cord with male plugs at either end to connect between the female jack on the end of your run and your computer's female ethernet jack.

On the other end, it would be another short patch cord to connect from the female jack on that end of the run and the female jack on your router.

I don't own an RJ-45 tool needed to create the male plugs...it's not that easy to get all the wires correctly lined up in the plug, anyway.

I always run my own bulk cable when I need to and attach female plugs to each end of the run. You can buy the plugs at Home Depot, it's simple to wire them. Just make sure you use either system 'A' or system 'B' at both ends! In fact, it's essential to adopt one scheme or the other for your entire network! ;-) The plugs come color coded for both.

They only cost a buck or two and if this cable run is going to be a pain to re-create, it would be well worth it. All the crossover cable does is swap out transmit/receive data.

I just mount the plugs in a box and face plate that are also available at home depot and plug a straight-thru patch cable into the box and connect the other end to my computer. You can set the box into the wall like a phone outlet...in fact, on one of my runs I have both the telephone and ethernet jacks mounted together on one plate that's flush with the wall.

You don't need the box, but it makes a neater job of it.

Hope that helps!

You could use a F/F adaptor which does the crossover, which then in your case would make a crossover cable into a straight through. Put the F/F on your existing cable and then a short one to the computer.

At least you're not having to buy and run new cable!
