Here’s my problem:

When I try to access my desktop computer via my notebook to play movies, it is slow in starting. And when it does start, it is jerky on playback. Or it may not play at all.

In addition, the Netgear MA401 802.11b Configuration Utility has the following issue during playback:

-When I try to access a file (i.e. movie) from the desktop computer, the “icon” goes red, yellow, and green. It sometimes stays red for a long time (i.e. 30 seconds). It will continue to alternate between the icon colors. The movie usually does not play if this continues too long.

In the past, the wireless playback of movies has been smooth. But I had a hard disk crash with my desktop about a month ago and I had to reformat and install everything. Since then, things have not been the same. In addition, to the slow wireless playback, my system takes a long time to shutdown (approx 1 ½ minutes.)

***System Specs (Desktop)
-Windows 2000 Pro (with all services packs and patches installed).
-Memory: 256K (SDRAm PC133)
-40 GB hard drive
-1 GB CPU
-MR 314 Wireless Router (with latest driver upgrade per Netgear tech support)
-Running SQL Server 7 and PC Anywhere

Things that are going ok with the desktop:DSL earthlink internet connection (bursting speeds at 933mb)

***System Specs (Notebook)
-Toshiba Satellite Pro 6000
-Windows XP Pro (with all services packs and patches installed).
-Memory: 512K
-40 gb hard drive
-1 gb CPU
-MA 401 Wireless Card (with latest driver upgrade per Netgear tech support)

I hope someone can help. My 4 year old wants to watch Cinderella on the Big screen TV via my notebook.
God Bless
Ron

At first I wanted to say lets look at the location and setup of your wireless gear....but if it worked fine before, and nothing changed but a blown hard drive...then, well...hmmm....

The "server"....256 megs is light for Win2K, add to that, you're running PcAnywhere, and SQL Server? Are they both running when you're trying to stream that video? Try shutting them down..SQL is a RAM hog, and PcA host mode can take up some RAM also.

Latest chipset/ATA drivers for your mobo also? Depending on what your motherboard is...may try to Intel Application Accelerator also.

Anti-virus real time file protection running also?

Is there anything in the networking components that may be different, or are you confident they are the same?

The system taking a long time to shut down worries me....perhaps the HD itself is still a bit off....

After your help and another forum, I finally got my card to start working properly.

I had to completely uninstall and reinstall my card driver. That did it. I also did the maintenance items that you suggested. Will be upgrading my RAM in about 2 weeks. I should be really "sailing" when add in the extra memory.

Thanks Again
