On my main computer, I can open any picture file with MSPaint, and doctor up the picture. When finished and I go to 'save as', it gives me several .bmp options and a couple of .jpg options. On this new machine I'm working on, I'm using W2K and cannot open anything but .bmp files w/ paint. All other formats I get an error screen on paint that says, "this is not a legit .bmp file and paint cannot open it or does not recognize the format". Any way I can change it so it will recognize all formats like my W XP machine does?

Technically, ALL versions of Paint CAN open GIF and JPG images IF the appropriate graphics converters (MS Office Graphics Filters)are installed:

Thanx for the info Norm (and Tony T),
That must be it, 'cause I have Office 2K installed on my other 'chinery, but haven't gotten around to installing it on this one yet. You can install the graphics filters without installing Office.

How?? Tony? The whole Office Program is just a lot of bloat that I really don't need. Once I have Office installed, and filters are in place, then click on paint, if I open 'files of type' and click on 'all', then open any .gif or .jpg, will that set the filters permanently? Then can I delete 'Office' program and the filters will remain?
Try reading the second link above. (backwards) :D

Norm....
Just edited that post.....is it correct???
I've never tried it. There's one way to find out, try it.
You don't need to install office though, there are filters you can download (2nd link) Again, I haven't tried that either.

I have already d/l'd Office and 'Paint' is opening and saving .jpg and .gif's. I'll delete Office later today and let you know if filters remain. If not I'll do the regedit thing you provided. Thanx again for all the help. You're the best Norm. - (binks)Stan
