I currently have a Linksys Ver2 modem downloading at 2.9 MB at best.
I tried a friends Com21 doxport 1110XB running on the same internet provider with the com21 that the provider sells and the speeds from the same computer with the com 21 are 4.2 MB
We ran them both on my computer to compare and it was the same.
Could this be possible that there is such a difference?
The Linksys is on their list of accaepstable modems but If I can pick up that much more speed with the Com21 I guess I will get one of those.
Any Ideas??

As a modem installer, I can tell you I have seen more than a handfull of dead Linksys's. We have used 3COM products and COM21. Although I prefer 3COM, we have very little trouble with the COM21's and they are solid and compact as well.
As far as speed, can't tell you a whole lot except that 3COM modems have been reviewed to be some of the fastest modems time and time again as well as some Toshibas. At the other end of the scale are Surfboards and RCAs.

Unfortunately, AT&T Broadband supplies users RCA modems...
While 3com Cable Modems (as well as their other products) seem extremely rare in retail sectors, can I just buy a Toshiba and start using it and send my RCA back to AT&T Broadband?

Are you leasing the RCA? If so, I can't see why you can't return it and purchase your own. You just need to let them know and supply them with your new serial# and MAC address. I agree, you don't see many 3COM modems on the shelves. Toshiba is selling a lot of their PCX2200U's.
Good Luck,
