Two neighbours and myself are planning a large coed 3d/2d/graphix/snd project. We're all about 10-15m (35-50ft) away from each other in a row. We each have a 4M/512K cable connection which we use to WAN with others farther away (about 5-10km). Is there any viable way to network the three of us while maintaining our own internet connections? We have plenty of cabling, a 4 port router, a 5 port hub, and a 5 port switch, and 6 computers (2 per household).

Would wi-fi work decently fast from 50' away? We've never attempted such a mixed network before.

maximum cat 5 cable length is 100meters (short), if you do the math, it should work find (theoretically), so try it

also i purchased 1 50ft cat5 cable, and it work flawlessly when connected to this other computer i have at my house, and there seems to be no speed change compared to my other computers (20ft or less), i say go for it, just get some quality cat5 or cat5e cable so you won't have to exchange it for a new one everytime the cable/copper gets damaged

it would be faster if you set it up as a big lan or wan

if you used just the internet connection it would be incredibly slower

it would work(if you want to use your internet connection independantly) if each of your household's workstations connect to your own gateway, you can do it with 3 sperate routers connected to each other (for security reasons), and each router has there own cable modems then you can set ip policies to each router to enable access to other routers

theres other ways can't think right now, use a network diagram program to do your thinking(network notepad), and to give you ideas

You both have a cable connection?

These routers do great VPN's between networks...snap to setup and install...would help well with your far away ones.

As to building a physical network between the two of you who are close to each other, you can easily keep your internet connections separate...and still tie the networks together...one way would be to introduce NetBEUI as the protocol all the computers use...leave the TCP/IP as it is.

Question for you is....is there anything that would limit running cables between the two buildings? If so, do you have to go wireless? Or could you just CAT5 across if you own the land..and it's easy to slice the lawn and lay an underground conduit across.

Well, it's not really viable to hang CAT5 across teh street like power lines is it? It "could" go from one window, then to another's window, but it's really complex. I will attach a diagram to the next post

also, any ideas for using 3 internet connectiosn w/o buying new hardware?

is cat5 weatherproof? it rains alot.

nm, using netbeui would probably work.

could someone elaborate on the simple diag and maybe suggest where the network hardware should go?
