Comcast Cable 3 com network card running 98 2nd edition.
The bottom line it just looses connection. This time I had to manuall put 192.168.1.1
in the gateway settings in my computer..
It's always something different. Any ideas?
Thanks in advance

Is your firmware fairly recent? Earlier versions, I didn't find the DHCP service too reliable, but after the later 30 versions, like 1.37 on up, it got better.
They're up to 1.44.something now.
Static IP address, such as 192.168.1.11, 255.255.255.0 subnet maks.
WINS..leave disabled.
Gateway, 192.168.1.1
DNS....enter your ISP's two DNS servers, which you can find on the "status" page of your routers web admin when it's connected. Host is simply your computers network identification, and domain is your IPS's formal domain name.

Thanks for replying. It's always something different. According to the instructions I shouldn't have to have a gateway set in the computer..BTW the other computer could not hit it either until I got it working with mine.

Two sides of the connection to the router to look at.
WAN side....your cable...meaning you can still get to your routers web admin page all the time, but just can't hit the internet. This means the LAN side is always working, your computer always keeps it's IP address of 192.168.1.XXX, the routers DHCP service is running fine.
LAN side....your computer falls off the routers LAN IP scheme often. You can test by trying to hit your routers web admin, or trying to ping the router, 192.168.1.1, and get no replies. Even if you can ping, sometimes DNS doesn't work well, like trying to ping something like www.yahoo.com. This is why I prefer to manually enter your ISP's DNS servers, because sometimes the routers don't do a good job of DNS forwarding (they hand themselves out as the DNS server in their DHCP service).

it's a gateway issue..It worked fine with no gateway on my computer then this morning I had to add 192.168.1.1..Rebooted and the red light went off and I was on line. I'll be curious to see how long this works.

Yeah "Gateway" is one of the 3x items the routers DHCP "hands out"....sometimes a workstation forgets it, and the routers don't always do the best job of reminding them.
A lot of times, on Win9X, start==>Run==>winipcfg release/renew will get it back. When you start finding yourself doing that more often, that's when I prefer to setup static IP addresses, meaning manually enter the IP, subnet, gateway, and DNS. They work best if all made static together, not just one of the components.

when it looses connection it won't renew the ip settings...As a matter of fact it never renews. I had everything set as static for a while...Then that quit...I think I'm snakebit..I had a 4 port webramp that was up for 6 years...:) Never had a problem...Except fpor downloads I wish I had it back..

Hmmm....I have almost a hundred little Linksys routers out there in the field....gotta say they've matured pretty well after a rough start (been installing them since the first 100 rolled off the assembly line).
As for RampNetworks stuff (Webramp)....I had (past tense) about 6 of those out in the field....not fond of them, replaced them all with 3COM LAN modems.
I'll put my money on something on the TCP settings on the workstations.
Other things to look at..
Windows Updates installed?
Latest NIC drivers?
Up to date anti-virus software?
Ad-Ware run recently to get rid of ad/spy/junkware?
Patch cables known to be in good shape?

I am running generic 3com drivers on the nic card....I'll find the latest and greatest...
Thanks

I updated the NIC driver and it even seems to be faster...Lets see what happens...
