long story short, i have a Zyxel 642R DSL modem/router i recieved from an old ISP i had (SprintBIZ). i need to telnet the router to be able to reconfigure it for a new ISP i will be switching to. i can remember the admin password, but not the IP (account has been dead for 6 months or so, and don't have a copy of the original paperwork from Sprint that had the gateway IP on it).

is there an easy way to find an IP on a LAN (if i shut down the server so no other machines were running) that is accepting comm requests? i just need to find the IP address so i can reconfigure it.

thanks, guys.

Maybe I am not understanding but wouldn't ipconfig /all in a command prompt window work. The ip would be the default gateway.

Yeah just look for the gateway on your IPCONFIG or WINIPCFG.

Usually will be a .1 on your subnet

thanks for the help guys, but ipconfig will give me the gateway IP i use for my current ISP (SBC) rather than the gateway i was using with my old ISP (SprintBIZ). so, if i connect the router to the LAN/switch, none of the systems will be able to telnet the router to reconfigure it for my upcoming ISP (AT&T DSL) since they are all configured with for my SBC account. my bad.... i didn't do a very good job of explaining myself.

i am kind of tiptoing around this as it almost would seem as if i am looking for a port or IP block scanner, which i am definitely not. at least not to scan anything outside the LAN.

heh.... well i did do a short "look-see" at the manual, but at the time, filtering through a 160 page manual didn;t seem appealing. if push comes to shove i can try and dig up the console cable for the router so i can configure it directly through a COM port instead of telnet.

i'm a lazy, lazy man :p

since i remember the password, i was just hoping for an easy way to discover the only other IP on the LAN (i would disconnect everything else from the LAN first.... except the old router and the computer i would be trying to discover the IP with).

..
3.1 Factory Ethernet Defaults
The Ethernet parameters of the Prestige are preset in the factory with the following values:
1. IP address of 192.168.1.1 with subnet mask of 255.255.255.0 (24 bits).
2. DHCP server enabled with 32 client IP addresses starting from 192.168.1.33.
These parameters should work for the majority of installations. If the parameters are satisfactory, you can
skip to section 3.4 TCP/IP Ethernet Setup and DHCP to enter the DNS server address(es) if your ISP gives
you explicit DNS server address(es). If you wish to change the factory defaults or to learn more about
TCP/IP, please read on.

Most of Tracet progarms will show you the IP of the Router on thier way to the www.

well, i suppose i should just try and locate the console cable. the modem/router (they are integrated into a single unit) has since been reset to different configuration info (by Sprint), so the factory defaults (from Zyxel) aren;t of any use. and since i con;t remember the router's IP (which is also the gateway IP for computers on the LAN), connecting it to the switch and tracert'ing something won;t help as they won;t be able to even get to the 'net without the gateway.

anyways, i really appreciate the help, guys. maybe getting off my duff for once will help :p

stupid question

but why would they (Sprint) change the factory default Router IP add ?

what good does that do?...

it was so they (techs at the NOC or wherever) could enter the router for troubleshooting purposes or assistance. since the factory defaults are non-routable IPs, they couldn;t do this. when i got the account (haven't had it for maybe 6 months or so), i was given 6 static WAN IPs. 5 for systems on the LAN, and one for the router/modem.

OK. got it worked out. finally found the original box for the Zyxel, which had the consolle cable in it.

had some minor probs, but as soon as i found the terminal emulation software i was able to get the needed info direct from the router.

sorry for all the hassle. i really do appreciate you guys' help though. thank you!
