He asked me if there was a way to keep his DSL connection alive without the use of 3rd part "keep-alive" software..
I've never messed with wireless routers & DSL, just cable, so maybe someone could provide some info!
<<<looks around for YOSC>>>
:p
He says the connection just drops after a few minutes.. I don't have much else in regards to details... I'll see what more I can pry out of him.
I would say it's a problem with his ISP. It's may not on his end

he says that the router doesn't have a "keep alive" feature so the DSL line goes idle after a while. Whats this "keep alive" nonsense all about? He says that he could use third party software to keep the connection alive and it works, but it screws up his other programs on the computer, so he doesn't want to go that route anymore. He tried the firmware upgrades for the router, but this "keep alive" feature was not added to the firmware, or so he says.
keep alive" feature does not work on PPPoE
What the feature is that on some router like the nexland turbo it ping an ip or www. address every 20 sec to keep the IP alive when there is no traffic

what if he was to start folding? would that keep the connection active? on second thought.. folding doesn't really sit there and broadcast does it? It seems to just download the WU and then fold and then upload back to Home.
