View Full Version : something wrong with my internet?
well ive been using this same isp for around 2 years, and i am not getting the speeds taht im supposed to get....
im supposed to get uncapped download speed/256kbit upload
on most of my speed tests i get
3700//160
4500//140
3600//180
i dont know whats been happening, and my ping in servers for online gaming isnt what i think it should be... ive been getting this for a few months now...... i haev a nice system nad a surfboard sb3100 modem... please help... my upload speed is supposed to be capped at 290
here is the stuff they ask for
TCP options string = 020405b40103030201010402
MTU = 1500
MTU is fully optimized for broadband.
MSS = 1460
Maximum useful data in each packet = 1460, which equals MSS.
Default Receive Window (RWIN) = 256960
RWIN Scaling (RFC1323) = 2 bits
Unscaled Receive Window = 64240
RWIN is a multiple of MSS
Other values for RWIN that might work well with your current MTU/MSS:
513920 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 8)
128480 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 2)
64240 (MSS x 44)
bandwidth * delay product:
Your RcvWindow limits you to: 10278.4 kbps (1284.8 KBytes/s) @ 200ms
Your RcvWindow limits you to: 4111.36 kbps (513.92 KBytes/s) @ 500ms
MTU Discovery (RFC1191) = ON
Time to live left = 52 hops
TTL value is ok.
Timestamps (RFC1323) = OFF
Selective Acknowledgements (RFC2018) = ON
IP type of service field (RFC1349)= 00000000
my isp is sanbrunocable

No ISP offers uncapped download speeds even LANs on Universities. Who is your ISP? Please read here (http://forums.speedguide.net/showthread.php?s=&threadid=85224) so that we can properly help you, if you do not answer all 6 questions at the top I cannot help you.:):cool:
1. Download CableNut. Done
2. What type of connection do you have? i.e. 56K, ISDN, DSL (PPPoE or not), Cable etc. Cable
3. Who is youe ISP and what is your advertised speed from them? i.e. Cox.net & 3000/256 - this is advertised in kilobits per second. If you don't know your caps please provide us with a link to your ISPs homepage. 3000/256
4. What are your current settings now? Do a TCP/IP Analyzer test and copy and paste the results (remember to XXXXX out your IP address) here.

5. What kind of speeds are you getting now? Do 10 speed tests from Speakeasy (choose the location nearest to you) clearing your internet temp files prior to each test, and give us the average of your top 5 tests. This will give you a good baseline to go by but remember speed tests are not 100% accurate.

6. Please tell us your operating system i.e. 95, 98, 98SE, ME, 2K or XP.

Is your ISP Cox? If so those speed tests are not accurate, try the OOL FTP Test in my Help & Tips link.
I'm unclear on your caps? Are you quoting me or are you on Cox?
:) :D
my isp is not COX my isp is San Bruno Cable Municipal Cable
OOL FTP is 4280 535 average kb/s

Man you aren't kidding, your ISPs site says "uncapped" but I think that's just a marketing ploy, they have to have some type of cap. Anyway it also says your upload is 128, it appears your download is actually around 4000 down, so let's base it on 4500 and see how these settings work:
DefaultReceiveWindow = 576000
DefaultSendWindow = 16384
DisableAddressSharing = 1
InitialLargeBufferCount = 100
InitialMediumBufferCount = 240
InitialSmallBufferCount = 320
LargeBufferSize = 81920
MaxFastTransmit = 64000
MediumBufferSize = 15040
PriorityBoost = 0
SmallBufferSize = 1280
TransmitWorker = 32
FastSendDatagramThreshold = 4096
EnableFastRouteLookup = 1
EnablePMTUDiscovery = 1
IgnorePushBitsOnReceive = 0
GlobalMaxTcpWindowSize = 64240
MaxFreeTcbs = 8000
MaxHashTableSize = 16384
MaxNormLookupMemory = 5000000
SackOpts = 1
SynAttackProtect = 1
Tcp1323Opts = 0
TcpLogLevel = 1
TcpMaxDupAcks = 2
TcpMaxHalfOpen = 100
TcpMaxHalfRetried = 80
TcpRecvSegmentSize = 1460
TcpSendSegmentSize = 1460
TcpTimedWaitDelay = 30
TcpUseRFC1122UrgentPointer = 0
TcpWindowSize = 64240
MaxConnectionsPer1_0Server = 20
MaxConnectionsPerServer = 10
DefaultTTL = 64
DisableUserTOSSetting = 0
TcpMaxDataRetransmissions = 6
DefaultTOSValue = 92
VERY IMPORTANT TO DO THE FOLLOWING
1. Under your LAN connection - properties - general tab, uninstall all the protocols there that you do not need.
2. Open IE and select tools - internet options - connections - LAN settings, make sure NOTHING there is checked.
3. Make sure you have the latest drivers for your NIC from the manufacturer. Set your NIC duplex mode to 10mb half duplex for Cable, for DSL it is ISP dependent unless you are using a router, if so then set it to 100mb full duplex for both Cable & DSL (the instructions are in my Help & Tips link (http://forums.speedguide.net/showthread.php?s=&postid=643301#post643301)). If you are using a router make sure you have the latest firmware.
4. Clear your temporary internet files.
5. Power cycle your modem, unplug it for atleast 15 seconds.
6. Download and update then do a scan with SpyBot (http://beam.to/spybotsd), anything checked in red is spyware and safe to remove.
7. Make sure you do the faster web page tweak in my Help & Tips link (http://forums.speedguide.net/showthread.php?s=&postid=643301#post643301).
Try those and see how they work, we can adjust things if need be.
:D ;) :cool:
umm actually, they haev different settings, i get 256 up for 10 bucks more..... okay ill try those out

Well you weren't defaults to begin with. Try making the following changes:
DefaultReceiveWindow = 640000
DefaultSendWindow = 32768
GlobalMaxTcpWindowSize = 128480
Tcp1323Opts = 1
TcpWindowSize = 128480
See how those changes work, if you want to go back to defaults just open CableNut and select "delete CableNut tweaks" then "save to registry" and reboot.
:) :D
happy new year.... oh and ill try those out :D

Great:D, your connection is kind of hard to tweak since you don't have any advertised download caps, but as long as your happy.;)
:cool:
well, my average ping in game servers have gone down around 8-10 and are much much more consistent
