what are some good ones and are their any drawbacks to doing these urself?
Most of the photo peoples out there are partial to the Epson 2220 -- I think that's the model # -- and the Canon's also test out real good. HP comes in about third most of the times in the tests, but is a better overall printer than the Epsons or Canons. Or you can spring for about a $K and get a Kodak dye sub printer (8x10's only).
I currently use HP's cause my wife works for them and we get use of printers for free. I currently use on my network the 970Cxi, the 995c, the 1218 photosmart and the latest addition, the 7550. They all do a fine job and I have many photo prints from all the printers framed around the house.
The disadvantages are that you're limited to 8x10's, unless you spring for a wide-format printer and the cost of the ink and paper come into play, but you get what you pay for.
I am totally happy with the output of all the above HP printers and even have relatives with pics hanging on their walls. If I need some better, or larger, I take a CD or memory card to my nearest digital photo processor and let them do the work.
A lot of the photo peeps use the Epson and sell their (up to) 8x10 photos that way. They have a long lifespan (15-20 years or so) when using Epson inks and papers.
Hope that helps...

10 15 year lifetime, could u explain this?
The photos will withstand UV and age that fades the inks. I think there's a special Epson paper out there that boasts of 50 years, but I could be wrong on that.
Of course, you can always reprint them! ;) And I also have spray-on photo lacquer that completely seals the ink and photo surface and ALSO protects against UV. I have no idea how long it lasts, but you can run the photo under the faucet, dry it off and frame it after being lacquered!

seems like it might be cheaper for me to just have prints made at a local place consider i dont really have a high demand for a photo printer.
But, it's pretty cool to be able to do a print right off the box though. You don't need THAT expensive a printer to be able to do near photo quality stuff -- less than $100 -- and the prints are maybe a dollar or so a piece.
The Epson would be top of the line and Canon and HP also have their $300-$400 top of the line printers, but they also have mid-line and low priced printers that do excellent work with a few less features that you maybe don't need anyway. The lower priced models will also be slower (firmware) but still use the same basic engine as the upper models. Shop around...
Also check the lab prices out there. Not cheap, but you always get top of the line stuff. I think that Walmart even does digital now.
I have a HP 960 that reallly does a nice job with photo's, Dakota can attest to this. I think you can get the 960 for about $150 these days. And it's pretty fast with text too
Absolutely Zuma, and that's where the HP printers shine. They are a better overall printer than any of the others, meaning that not only do they print excellent photos, but the text printing and speed are second to none.

The new generation HP X550 printers are very impressive. I have the 7550 and I've been impressed with its output from my D60 files I've printed with it.

I have had problems with head clogging and misalignment with Epson printers in the past. I cannot recommend them.

The cheaper HP's have a problem with pulling paper in perfectly straight...
I've a 932c with that problem...It probalby wouldn't be noticable for prints but if you need something to line up perfect for an Excel spreadsheet, then buy a better one.
The hi res on the HP's with photopaper as Dakota already stated is crazy. Hard to believe you can get a print like that out of a printer that costs less than a hundred bucks.
Dakota, I've quite a few friends who work for HP in the valley here.

Cool! When my wide transferred from Cali to here, we did have Boise as a choice along with Corvallis. We know a few people that went out there to Boise.
