I have had Roadrunner cable modem for a couple of years now with no problems. It still works great! But Verizon DSL is cheaper. So I decided to give it a try. My account has been activated for nearly two weeks now and I have never been able to connect. They show no traffic on my lines. They even sent me a new modem. I can never get a valid IP address. My ethernet light just blinks about once very five seconds. They sent a tech and he could connect to the network on my phone line just fine with his laptop, but had no suggestions on what could be up with my pc. They aren't trained for that! If anyone could possible offer any suggestion as to what settings might be ok for Roadrunner and cause DSL not to function, I would really appreciate it!!! If worse comes to worse I will stay with Roadrunneer. I am pulling my hair out and would like to conquer this if possible. Thanks in advance!!!

I'm fairly new to DSL, so I'll see if I can get this started. Can you get to the DSL modem's status page from your computer? If yes, then are the userid and passwords set up correctly? How is the modem connected to the computer? Directly to the NIC or do you have a router? Answers to these questions can help other forum members help you.
As I said I'm new to this stuff too. My DSL connection is with an ADSL modem/4 port router.

well I am connected directly, not through a router. I don't think I can get to the DSL modem's status page. It is a Westell Dual Connect modem.

do this.
are you using usb or a ethernet connection?
if you are using an ethernet connection, make sure you are using the proper cable. you need a straight through cable, not a crossover cable.
next after connecting to the computer remove the power wire from your modem and let it sit for like 5 sec. then reconnect your power to the modem.
next what kind of OS are you using.
you need to go to control panel, go to network connections or internet connections. go to connection then go to LAN settings then set your connection to automatically detect settings.
reboot your computer.
see if this helps.

I don't know about your modem, but with mine I can start up my browser and enter http://192.168.x.x and it connects to the modem itself. Then I can check the status and even change settings. Your manual should show what the address is for your modem.

Have you installed the latest PPPoE software the ISP uses?
Have you reset the TCP/IP bound to your network card to default settings? Nothing leftover from your cable setup?

I believe everything is set as it should be. I don't see any button saying default settings for TCP/IP. Should I remove network neighborhood and dial-up networking and reinstall them? How would I do that? I don't know if there is anything left over from Roadrunner. How can I check that?

Justy FYI. I finally broke down and bought a new Siemens Ethernet card. And the DSL works fine now!! No problems at all. Must have been a defect in the old card! I still don't know exactly why the Cable would work with the card and DSL not, but oh well. Problem solved! But thanks for all your help and suggestions! I really appreciate it!!!
