I just had dsl installed. I was wondering if it would be of any benefit to install new cat5 or cat5e cable from the computer to the box outside my house or am i wasting my time?

whoops, sorry about that. with a litle more searching i found what i was looking for. sory for taking up space.
Cat5E was an experimental higher bandwidth cabling over standard 100 Mbit Cat5.
Technically, on predetermined lengths of Cat5E you can reach 1 Gbit Ethernet speeds. This is acomplished by running four bidirectional channels each at 250 Mhz, for a combined bandwidth of 1Gbit.

That depends on the condition of the wiring that was/is in place. If the wiring is old, or somehow improperly wired, or poorly done, then yes running new wiring will help. If the wiring is quite new, then rewiring with CAT5/5e would probably not help. If the wiring is near anything that could give off EMI to cause some stregnth issues, then the tighter twisting of the pairs in 5e or better yet CAT 6 can help you...by cutting "attenuation"....which is basically signal loss.
It's a bit overkill, but hey, I wanted it done, and I had the means of doing so, so it was done...when I rebuilt my house, I had CAT3 bring in the phone from the street, and my entire house is wired with 5e and 6..phones and data jacks. If I can help my online ping by cutting even 2 ms off...I'll do it.

yea i went ahead and ran a dedicated cat5-e line from the box to the modem directly. I think it made a huge difference in the speed. it only cost me 30 bucks so it was definately worth it.
