I am using DSL. I would like to try an offer by a cable company. Can DSL and CABLE be installed on the same system. I have one nic card, Win98se, IE5.5. I want to keep the DSL if I do not like the cable service.
Thanks, ckshan

Welcome to Speedguide:D, you can use one or the other at a time, you can use the same NIC but you may have to setup a few different protocols for the cable modem to work.:) ;)

Thanks for the response . Would it be better or worse to have two nic cards? The one I have (Intel 82557 ) only has one jack on the card.
Thanks, ckshan

Just use one, Intel makes good NICs just make sure your drivers for it are up to date from Intel for the best perfromance.:) :D

mnosteele52, I have not hooked up a cable modem yet but I think it will need to be plugged into the nic. With only one jack on the nic do I simply unplug the DSL modem from the card when I have cable plugged into it? Is some kind of splitter needed?
Thanks,ckshan

As I said above..... you can use one or the other (DSL or Cable), not both at the same time.:) ;)

It works perfectly fine, witn Win98, you want to leave it with 1x NIC.

I had a buddy who ran both, he was such an online gamer, he'd insist of seeing which of cable or DSL gave the best ping to whatever clan match server he was playing on that night...he'd log on ahead of the match several times with each, and stick with whichever gave him the best ping.

Depending on what software your DSL provider gives you....some of the stuff out there I can see having an impact on your cable...such as SBC/Yahoo's latest PPPoE Connection Manager. If you have something like that which affects your cable....I'd say a router would be your easiest way of going back and forth. Would take you 10 seconds to switch modems into the router, log onto the routers web admin, and switch logon types.
