DSL with Linksys router always disconnecting

Hi,

I am accessing the net using a linksys router and PPPoe dsl on W98.

Since I installed the router, my connection stops responding very often. When this happens, I'm not even able to connect to the router's control panel.

The only way (that I found...) to reconnect is to run WINIPCFG, click the RELEASE button, then the RENEW button. This seems re refesh my connection and everything works well after... until it hangs again.

It doesn't do this if I bypass the router.

Any ideas ?

Assuming you only have one machine inside the router, I would recommend you try setting a static IP on the machine. If you have left the router at the default addressing scheme of 192.168.1.1/255.255.255.0 then you would set your IP configuration on your TCP/IP adapter bound to your NIC as:

IP Address: 192.168.1.2
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: 192.168.1.1

If this doesnt straighten it out, it is time to exchange the router. Also, make sure you have the latest firmware on the router from Linksys

Don't forget DNS entries...else he will not browse. For DNS servers, you can either use the routers IP, 192.168.1.1, or enter the 2x DNS servers you ISP uses, which you can find on the status page of your routers web admin when it's connected.

How old is the router, and what version of firmware are you using? You can tell the firmware version of the first page of your routers web admin, the latest is 1.44.something.

YOSC, My suggestion was to see if there was an issue just with the Linksys-Client connection, as he seems to be losing connection with it (the comment about not being able to reach 192.168.1.1)

Pharkas, definitely update your firmware to at least 1.43 from Linksys. I have not done the 1.44 patch yet, so I can't recommend it.

use static when configuring your router and get the information of the assuming 1 computers NIC's information. example ip address, subnet, dns etc. after that it should work like a charm :)
