Good Morning to all, My wifes computer had to go to a repair shop, the motherboard was fried, well any ways, we got the puter back, all seems fine, except music that was on the computer, sounds distorted or tinny.....If we play music from a CD disc it sounds normal.....She is running windowas 98 2 ED, She has plenty of memory, also if she downloads music and plays it back it also sounds distorted

She uses Music Match as her default, Have tried real player and media, with the same results.

Any one here at SG have any ideas why? Any and all suggestions or help will be greatly appreciated.... Happy holidays to you all.

Is the sound card integrated or a seperate PCI card?

Are the sound card drivers up to date?

While it may not help the "tinniness" of the sound, for goodness sake...don't let MusicMatch Jukebox be the DEFAULT player! That thing is a resource hog...I'd suggest going into MusicMatch's options, unchecking its file associations and using Windows Media Player (the old mplayer2.exe found in the Program Files > Windows Media Player folder, not the 7.0 version) or Winamp -- something much quicker and less intrusive.

Hello Cable Dude,
Yes the drivers are up to date, and I believe the sound card is intergated....This is driving my wife nuts, which in turn I am getting no peace from her until the problem is corrected...She is can be such a nag..:D She is using something called sound max that the tech installed at the repair shop last week.

Thanks for replying, I hope you can think of something to help me on this problem.....
Have a great Day!

you should get her a nicer sound card. I have a SB live 5.1 and got it for 32 bucks off newegg. highly suggested, especially for a casual listener like your wife

most likely the new motherboard has some really cheap on board sound.

Thanks TEH E WIN, the reason it took so long for me to get back to you was I had to go buy a SB LIVE 5.1, That solved the problem and it sounds great!

One question I have for you, is that I was told to shut off the speakers for the nite when not in use, other wise after a while the sound could get distorted again, that does not make sense to me, is that a true statement?

Thanks again for the "sound" advice..;)

Happy Holidays to you and yours...

My speakers shut off automatically and still sound as good as the first day I got them. :)

Merry Christmas CableDude and a Happy New Year,
Thanks for the info on your speakers, how long have you been running them?

Hi Chevy. :)

I've had them for three years now. Altec Lansing ACS45 is the model. Not sure if Altec Lansing still makes them.

I shut my work speakers off when I'm done for the day with them too.

Happy Holidays. :)
